Born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands
Marlies Lageweg studied history at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and documentary photography at the Royal academy of arts in The Hague.
As a researcher and visual artist she explores the way we identify and define ourselves in terms of the past. In her work she questions the influence of a cultural view and representation of history. She works together with scientists and experts on the subject.
Photography is the starting point of her visual research, but can be extended to what subject and research requires. Text and archival objects and materials are a substantial part of the work.
Her booklet on the anti-historical ideas that formed the basis of the reconstruction of the city of rotterdam received a Foam dummy award. In 2019 she got a Young Talent scolarship from the Mondriaan Foundation. Her work had been exhibited at CBK Rotterdam, Schouwburg Rotterdam, Charlois Speciaal, Art Rotterdam 2020 and PaperArtGalerie in the Hague.
